SAINT-ANDRÉ CATHEDRAL – Bordeaux Walking Tours

Saint André Cathedral and its tower Pey Berland offer one of the most beautiful views of Bordeaux similar to the Belvedere of the Cité du Vin. From the top of its 66 meters and its two terraces, the tower offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city of Bordeaux. The first, which rises to 40 meters, allows you to admire the main monuments and districts of Bordeaux.

In addition, you can see the two smaller bells of the belfry. The second terrace, accessible after climbing the 233 steps that separate it from the mainland and 10 meters higher, overlooks the entire city and surrounds the spire of the bell tower for a 360° view.

Saint André Cathedral Architecture

The beginning of its construction dates from the 12th century. Its work continued until the 16th century. It was consecrated on May 1, 1096 by Pope Urban II. In France, there are 71 monuments that are associated with the pilgrimage, 19 of which are located in Aquitaine including 3 in the Bordeaux region. Of course, there is the Saint-André Cathedral, the Saint-Seurin basilica, and the Saint-Michel basilica.

Saint André Cathedral was built and decorated between the 11th and 16th centuries. The main church of the city, was often rebuilt according to events in the history of the city. Regarding its architecture, it has an imposing tympanum on the outside which is divided into 3 parts. The height under the vault is impressive with its 23 meters high under the nave and 29 meters in the heart. Its interior length is 124 meters long with a single nave without aisle 18 meters wide at the transept.
